12 Better-Ingredient Halloween Candy Swaps for Kids 🎃

Halloween is one of those times when I’m definitely not trying to make everything perfect.

My kids are going trick-or-treating. They’re going to come home with buckets full of candy. And yes—they’re going to eat it.

But when I’m the one buying the candy for our house, a Halloween party, a school celebration, or just to have around during spooky season, I like choosing options with ingredients I feel a little better about when I can.

I take the same approach with our every day groceries, too. These are some of the better ingredient grocery swaps my family loves that have become staples in our house.

That’s really what One Simple Swap is all about.

You don’t have to replace everything your family loves. Sometimes it’s simply choosing an alternative when there’s an easy one available.

So if you’re stocking your Halloween candy bowl this year, here are 12 better-ingredient Halloween candy swaps my family can actually get excited about.

Looking for Halloween treats without candy? Jump to my non-candy Halloween treats for kids for classroom favors, trick-or-treat alternatives and affordable bulk ideas.

🎃 My Top 3 Better-Ingredient Halloween Candy Picks

Best Overall: YumEarth Giggles
These are one of my favorite swaps because they still feel like a fun, colorful Halloween candy kids get excited about.

Best Gummy: JOYRIDE
If your kids love gummy or sour candy, JOYRIDE is a fun swap that still feels like the real thing.

→ Shop JOYRIDE on Amazon

Best Chocolate: UNREAL
For the chocolate lovers, UNREAL is one of my go-to swaps when I want something with simpler ingredients.

→ Shop UNREAL on Amazon

And if you need something cute to actually put all that candy in:

1. Instead of M&M’s → UNREAL Milk Chocolate Gems

This is probably one of the easiest Halloween candy swaps.

UNREAL Milk Chocolate Gems still give you that colorful, crunchy chocolate-candy experience kids love, but they’re made without artificial colors.

And most importantly? They still feel like candy.

That’s a big thing for me, especially at Halloween. I’m not looking for something that tastes like a “healthy version” of a treat. I want something my kids are actually excited to eat.

Shop the swap:
→ UNREAL Milk Chocolate Gems

2. Instead of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups → UNREAL Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

Chocolate and peanut butter is hard to beat.

UNREAL’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups give you that same chocolate-and-peanut-butter combination in an option with ingredients I prefer.

These would be an easy addition to a Halloween candy bowl—or something I’d happily keep hidden in the pantry for myself.

Shop the swap:
→ UNREAL Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

3. Instead of Almond Joy → UNREAL Dark Chocolate Coconut Bars

If you have a coconut lover in your house, try UNREAL’s Dark Chocolate Coconut Bars.

You still get that chocolate-and-coconut combination, but in a version with a simpler ingredient list.

This is exactly the kind of swap I love because it doesn’t feel like you’re giving anything up.

Shop the swap:
→ UNREAL Dark Chocolate Coconut Bars

4. Instead of Snickers → UNREAL Dark Chocolate Caramel Peanut Nougat Bars

This one gives you that chewy caramel, peanuts, nougat and chocolate combination that makes a candy bar feel like a real candy bar.

It’s another swap where I don’t feel like you’re sacrificing the fun part just to choose an option with ingredients you prefer.

Shop the swap:
→ UNREAL Dark Chocolate Caramel Peanut Nougat Bars

5. Instead of Skittles → YumEarth Giggles

If your kids love fruity candy, YumEarth Giggles are such an easy swap.

They’re colorful, fruity and still look like something a kid would actually be excited to find in a Halloween candy bowl.

This is probably one of my favorite one-for-one swaps on the list.

Shop the swap:
→ YumEarth Giggles

6. Instead of Traditional Gummy Candy → YumEarth Organic Gummy Fruits

For the gummy-candy kids, YumEarth Organic Gummy Fruits are another easy option.

And if you’re looking for everyday options beyond Halloween, I also put together 15 easy after-school snacks my kids actually eat.

The Halloween version comes in fun seasonal shapes and is made without artificial dyes.

These can also be a useful option when you’re shopping for classroom treats or larger groups. If food allergies are involved, though, always check the current package and allergen information yourself before serving.

Shop the swap:
→ YumEarth Organic Gummy Fruits

7. Instead of Traditional Lollipops → YumEarth Organic Halloween Lollipops

Lollipops are such an easy Halloween treat because they’re individually wrapped and kids love them.

YumEarth makes organic lollipops in a variety of fruity flavors, and they’re another simple option for trick-or-treaters, school parties or Halloween events.

Shop the swap:
→ YumEarth Organic Halloween Lollipops

8. Instead of Sour Patch Kids → JOYRIDE Sour Smacks & Watermelon Wedges

Have a kid who immediately goes for the sour candy?

This is where JOYRIDE Sour Smacks and Sour Watermelon Wedges come in.

I love including a sour option because not every kid wants chocolate, and Halloween candy swaps shouldn’t mean taking away all the fun choices.

I’d grab whichever flavor your family prefers—or try both.

Shop the swaps:
→ JOYRIDE Sour Smacks
→ JOYRIDE Sour Watermelon Wedges

9. Instead of Gummy Worms & Crunchy Fruity Candy → JOYRIDE Gummy Worms & Frosted Beads

Another fun option for the fruity-candy crowd is JOYRIDE.

Their Gummy Worms give you that classic chewy gummy experience, while Frosted Beads are a fun option for kids who love crunchy fruity candy.

And that’s what I want these swaps to be: actual treats.

We’re not trying to turn Halloween candy into carrots. 😂 We’re simply looking for alternatives when there happens to be one we like.

Shop the swaps:
→ JOYRIDE Gummy Worms
→ JOYRIDE Frosted Beads

10. Instead of a Traditional Fruity Candy Assortment → YumEarth Halloween Variety Pack

If you’re handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, sometimes the easiest option is buying one variety pack instead of several individual bags.

A YumEarth Halloween assortment gives you several different fruity treats in one purchase, which makes this an especially convenient option for filling a candy bowl.

Shop the swap:
→ YumEarth Halloween Variety Pack

11. Instead of a Traditional Chocolate Variety Pack → UNREAL Halloween Variety Pack

Same idea—but for the chocolate lovers.

A variety pack is an easy way to get several different UNREAL candies without buying a full-size bag of every single variety.

It also makes the candy feel a little more like the individually wrapped treats kids expect to get while trick-or-treating.

12. Instead of Replacing Everything → Mix the Two

This may actually be my favorite swap on the entire list.

Your Halloween candy bowl doesn’t need to be 100% better-ingredient candy.

And it doesn’t need to be 100% traditional candy either.

Buy some of the candy your kids already love. Add a bag of UNREAL Gems. Throw in some YumEarth Giggles. Add JOYRIDE for the sour-candy kids.

That’s it.

One Simple Swap has never been about completely overhauling everything your family eats.

Sometimes changing one thing is enough.

A Few Non-Candy Halloween Treats

Want something edible that isn’t candy? Individual snack-size bags can be another fun option for Halloween parties, classroom celebrations or even your trick-or-treat bowl.

Nature’s Garden Halloween Yoggies are such a fun option. They’re individually packaged yogurt-covered fruit bites in Halloween-themed packs, making them easy to hand out to trick-or-treaters or add to Halloween treat bags.

I also love LesserEvil Spooky Popcorn and Spooky Space Balls for kids who would rather have something salty and crunchy. Mixing a few snack options into the candy bowl gives kids something different from all the traditional candy they’ll already be bringing home.

A few fun Halloween snack swaps:
→ Nature’s Garden Halloween Yoggies
→ LesserEvil Spooky Popcorn Snack Packs
→ LesserEvil Spooky Space Balls Snack Packs

You can mix these right into your Halloween bowl alongside UNREAL, YumEarth and JOYRIDE—or use them for classroom parties, sports-team treats and Halloween goodie bags.

🎃 Non-Candy Halloween Treats Kids Actually Want

Candy isn’t the only thing kids get excited about at Halloween! For classroom goodie bags, trunk-or-treat events or trick-or-treaters, these simple non-food treats are fun alternatives. Many are sold in bulk, which makes them convenient for larger groups.

1. Halloween stickers and temporary tattoos. Easy to hand out and perfect for Halloween goodie bags.

→ Shop Halloween Sticker Packs
→ Shop Halloween Temporary Tattoos

2. Glow sticks and glow bracelets. Fun for Halloween night and party favors. Glow accessories are not a substitute for reflective clothing or lights when trick-or-treating after dark.

→ Shop Halloween Glow Sticks

3. Mini Halloween bubble wands. A playful option for younger kids; look for small, individually packaged wands if you’re filling classroom bags.
→ Shop Mini Halloween Bubble Wands on Amazon

4. Mini Halloween coloring books. A simple classroom favor, especially paired with a few crayons.
→ Shop Mini Halloween Coloring Books on Amazon

5. Small Halloween toys and party favors. Mini fidget toys and seasonal trinkets can be fun extras. Always check recommended ages and small-parts warnings.
→ Shop Bulk Halloween Party Favors on Amazon

My tip: compare the cost per child. When buying for a classroom or dozens of trick-or-treaters, divide the package price by the number of favors. For example, a $15 pack of 50 favors works out to 30 cents each. You don’t need to spend a fortune to give kids something fun!

Even adding one non-candy option gives kids another choice.

Make Your Own Halloween Treat Bags 🎃

Another easy idea is making individual Halloween treat bags.

This would be especially cute for a classroom party, sports team, neighborhood party or friends.

And if you’re already thinking about school-day food, here are 10 easy school lunch ideas my kids actually eat for some more inspiration.

Grab some inexpensive Halloween treat bags and add one or two of the candies above along with a sticker, temporary tattoo or glow stick.

You could do something as simple as:

1 candy + 1 non-candy treat + a cute Halloween bag.

Done.

→ Halloween Treat Bags

I like this because you can easily customize the bags depending on who you’re making them for without turning it into an elaborate Pinterest project.

How I’d Build a Better-Ingredient Halloween Candy Bowl

If I were putting together our Halloween candy bowl using these swaps, I’d keep it really simple:

Chocolate: UNREAL Milk Chocolate Gems + Peanut Butter Cups

Fruity: YumEarth Giggles + Gummy Fruits

Sour: JOYRIDE Smacks + Watermelon Wedges

Fun extras: JOYRIDE Gummy Worms + Frosted Beads

Non-candy: Stickers, temporary tattoos or glow sticks

Traditional favorites: A few of the classics my kids love

And of course, put everything in a cute Halloween bowl:

→ Shop Halloween Candy Bowls

That gives everyone options without making Halloween feel restrictive.

One important reminder: if you’re buying candy for someone with food allergies, always check the actual package before serving it. Ingredients, allergen statements and manufacturing practices can change.

Don’t Forget the Trick-or-Treat Bag! 🎃

Of course, once Halloween night arrives, the kids need somewhere to put all that candy.

You can always use the classic plastic pumpkin bucket, but I also love reusable Halloween trick-or-treat bags that can come back out every year.

There are so many cute options, and this is one of those things that’s easy to forget about until Halloween is suddenly a few days away.

→ Reusable Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bags
→ Halloween Trick-or-Treat Buckets

Pick whichever works best for your kids and hopefully reuse it next Halloween too.

Halloween Doesn’t Have to Be All or Nothing

I don’t want my kids growing up thinking every fun food needs to be replaced with a “healthy” version.

Halloween is supposed to be fun.

But there are also so many alternatives available now that it’s surprisingly easy to find treats with ingredients I prefer that my kids are still genuinely excited to eat.

So no, I’m not taking away their trick-or-treat candy.

I’m just making a few different choices when I’m the one doing the shopping.

And that’s the whole idea behind One Simple Swap.

You don’t have to change everything.

Just start with one simple swap. 🤍
