Sometimes the most fun holiday food is the kind that makes everyone smile before they even take a bite. For our Halloween spread, we kept things playful: a few spooky twists on familiar favorites, plenty of orange and black, and treats the kids could easily grab between activities.
Here’s a peek at the Halloween party food we put together at home—nothing overly elaborate, just a festive mix that looked adorable all set out on the kitchen island.
5 easy Halloween appetizers and snacks for kids
Three of these made it onto our Halloween table: buffalo chicken dip, mummy hot dogs, and white chocolate-covered strawberry ghosts. I’ve also made marshmallow ghost fruit kabobs before, and I’m including mini spider pizzas as one more fun idea to try. Here’s how to recreate all five.
1. Mummy hot dogs

These little mummies were one of the cutest parts of our spread. They’re an easy savory bite to balance out the Halloween sweets.
Ingredients (makes about 24 mini mummies):
- 1 package (about 24) fully cooked cocktail-size hot dogs
- 1 tube (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
- Mustard or ketchup for tiny eyes, or edible candy eyes
- Ketchup or mustard for dipping
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F, or follow the crescent dough package’s baking directions. Line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Unroll the crescent dough, press the seams together, and slice into thin strips.
- Wrap a strip around each hot dog like mummy bandages, leaving a small gap for the face.
- Arrange on the baking sheet and bake for approximately 12–15 minutes, until the dough is golden and cooked through and the hot dogs are heated thoroughly.
- Let cool slightly, then dot on mustard or ketchup eyes (or attach edible eyes). Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Make-ahead tip: Assemble the wrapped hot dogs shortly before baking and keep refrigerated until you’re ready to pop them in the oven. Baking time may vary with dough and hot dog size.
Shop the mummy-dog supplies: Wilton edible candy eyes on Amazon.
For easy cleanup: Shop Reynolds unbleached parchment paper on Amazon to line the baking tray. This is a suggested supply.
2. White chocolate-covered strawberry ghosts

These were one of my favorite treats on the table! Fresh strawberries dipped in white chocolate turned into adorable little ghosts, with the green tops left on for a fun finishing touch. They also added a fresh, fruity option alongside the richer snacks.
What you need: Fresh strawberries, white chocolate or white melting wafers, and a little dark chocolate or mini chocolate chips for the faces.
- Wash the strawberries and dry them completely so the chocolate sticks.
- Melt the white chocolate according to the package instructions.
- Dip each strawberry, letting a little chocolate pool at the bottom to create a ghostly shape.
- Add small dark chocolate eyes and a mouth, then let the coating set on parchment paper.
- Refrigerate until serving.
Make-ahead tip: Prepare them the day of your party for the freshest look and texture.
Helpful baking supply: Shop Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers on Amazon for dipping the strawberries. This is a suggested option, not a claim that I used this exact brand.
3. Easy buffalo chicken dip with little ghosts

This was our savory centerpiece: warm, cheesy buffalo chicken dip topped with three little white ghosts. The dark purple tortilla chips made it feel especially festive.
What I used:
- Prepackaged shredded chicken (amount to taste)
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 cup buffalo sauce
- Shredded Monterey cheese and cheddar cheese (amounts to taste)
- A little sour cream
- Salt and pepper, to taste
It started as a simple buffalo chicken dip, but I added sour cream, salt and pepper and used both Monterey and cheddar cheeses—so it’s more than a strict four-ingredient recipe!
How to make a similar version:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Combine the cooked shredded chicken, softened cream cheese, buffalo sauce, a little sour cream, and some of both cheeses. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Transfer to an oven-safe baking dish and top with the remaining shredded cheese.
- Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes, until hot and bubbling, checking that the center reaches 165°F.
- For the Halloween ghosts, add little dollops of sour cream after baking and use tiny edible dark dots for eyes.
- Serve warm with tortilla chips or vegetables.
350°F for 30 minutes is the actual baking time and temperature I used. The chicken, cheese, and sour cream quantities weren’t measured here.
Party tip: You can assemble the dip ahead of time and refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake; allow extra heating time if chilled.
4. Marshmallow ghost fruit kabobs
I’ve made these before, and they’re such a cute way to bring fresh fruit to a Halloween party. The marshmallow ghosts are the stars of the show!
Ingredients (makes about 12 kabobs):
- 12 large marshmallows
- 12 strawberries, hulled
- 1–2 bananas, cut into thick rounds
- About 24 seedless grapes
- A little melted chocolate or food-safe edible marker for ghost faces
- 12 short, food-safe skewers
Instructions:
- Wash and thoroughly dry the fruit. Cut the strawberries and bananas into bite-size pieces as needed.
- Draw two eyes and a little mouth on each marshmallow using melted chocolate or an edible marker. Let set.
- Thread the fruit onto skewers, finishing with a marshmallow ghost at the top.
- Arrange on a platter and serve promptly; refrigerate if making ahead.
Kid-friendly tip: For younger children, skip pointed skewers and arrange the fruit and ghosts in little cups instead. Cut grapes lengthwise into quarters for young children to reduce choking risk.
5. Mini spider pizzas

One more Halloween appetizer idea to try: These quick mini pizzas are topped with olive spiders and are a great savory option if you want something besides dip and hot dogs.
Ingredients (makes 8):
- 4 English muffins, split
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- About 12–16 pitted black olives
- Optional: dried oregano
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and place the English muffin halves on a baking sheet.
- Spread each half with pizza sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella.
- Slice olives: use one olive half for each spider’s body and thin olive strips for legs. Arrange on the cheese.
- Bake about 10–12 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the muffin edges are crisp.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Shortcut: Assemble the pizzas ahead and refrigerate until baking. Olive pieces can shift as cheese melts, so you can adjust the spiders carefully after baking.
How to make a Halloween snack spread feel pulled together
- Mix sweet and savory: Pair chocolate-dipped fruit and marshmallow kabobs with something salty and filling, like mummy dogs or mini pizzas.
- Repeat a few colors: Orange, black, white, and purple made the whole table feel intentional.
- Use different serving heights and shapes: Platters, bowls, and a big dip dish help each treat stand out.
- Make what you can ahead: Decorate the strawberries and marshmallow ghosts before guests arrive, following appropriate food-storage guidance.
Shop a few Halloween recipe essentials
For the finishing touches, I love using festive Halloween paper plates and coordinating Halloween napkins. A simple white serving platter makes the strawberry ghosts stand out, while a reusable clear glass baking dish is perfect for baking and serving the buffalo chicken dip.
These are convenient options if you need supplies to recreate the recipes above. They are suggestions, not necessarily the exact products I used:
- Edible candy eyes for mummy hot dogs
- White vanilla melting wafers for strawberry ghosts
- Parchment paper for easy baking and cleanup
Save these ideas for your next Halloween party
My favorite part of this kind of spread is that it doesn’t need to be perfect. A few easy snacks with funny little faces can turn an ordinary kitchen island into a Halloween party table the kids will remember. Save this post for next October—or whenever you need a little spooky inspiration!
